Support Design and Implementation

About MassHousing

A contract was awarded to the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH) to be the certifying body, and the training and technical assistance vendor. In Massachusetts, sober homes and recovery residences are different models for substance abuse recovery. Recovery residences — formerly known as halfway houses — are licensed residential treatment programs, while Massachusetts sober homes are peer-led and do not provide treatment.

Since its inception, MassHousing has provided more than $27.5 billion for affordable housing. BOSTON – January 3, 2024 – MassHousing in 2023 awarded a total of $679,837 in grant funding to help preserve or create 98 affordable sober housing units and provide supportive services to men, women and families impacted by substance use disorder. BOSTON – March 22, 2022 – MassHousing has awarded a total of $245,845 in grant funding to create 22 new affordable sober housing units and preserve and additional 45 sober homes for men, women, and families in five communities. BOSTON – March 20, 2024 – MassHousing has awarded $220,000 in grant funding to help preserve 28 affordable sober housing units and provide supportive services to 385 men, women and families impacted by substance use disorder. BOSTON – December 17, 2021 – MassHousing has awarded a total of $627,350 in grant funding to create 46 new affordable sober housing units and preserve and additional 35 sober homes for men, women, families and senior citizens in eight communities. The Center for Community Recovery Innovations, Inc., issues an annual Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit projects for funding.

In accordance with this requirement, MASH serves as the primary agency for accountability of all certified homes in Massachusetts. Our organization also provides supervision and training for sober homes, and maintains a database of more than 180 MASH-certified sober homes. To date, CCRI has awarded more than $13 million in grants for the creation or preservation of more than 2,700 units of substance-free housing, in 54 communities, serving recovery populations that include men, women, families, veterans, the homeless and ex-offenders. The grants come from the Center for Community Recovery Innovations, Inc. (CCRI), a nonprofit subsidiary corporation of MassHousing that helps nonprofits create or preserve affordable sober housing in Massachusetts for individuals in recovery. St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children, Boston, $72,000 Grant funds will help support fire and safety improvements to preserve 12 units of affordable sober housing for young families in Boston. “Having a quality home in a sober setting is critical for the success of people overcoming addiction,” said MassHousing Executive Director Chrystal Kornegay.
